How our Pumpkin Patch started

This is the story of how our pumpkin patch started in 2022. We thought you might like to hear it.

During Covid all the Pumpkin Patches were booked out quickly and our three kids were left disappointed. So, we found one farm that had an honesty box for pumpkins. We visited that and brought home a variety of pumpkins and gourds.

Sean, Eimear and Conor carved their pumpkins. They also washed, dried and saved all the seeds and stored them in the hot press over the winter.

In Spring, they planted the pumpkin seeds in trays in the greenhouse. To their delight, they pretty much all grew. They minded them well, and after a few weeks it was time to transplant them out into the field.

Again, the kids were involved in all stages – they couldn’t wait to get home from school to go planting in the evenings.

The pumpkins had to be irrigated as it was a dry spell after planting. To the kids great excitement, the pumpkins grew well.

They decided to maybe open up a patch for neighbours and friends. All the cousins came on board and decorated bales and helped to build the decorations.

We opened for one weekend and had 1400 people visit. We were blown away with the level of interest, so had to do tickets for the next year.

The patch has grown ever since.
